The Mindful Design Practice module began with a visit to the Nilupul Centre in Dundee to have introduction to mindfulness practice with Buddhist monk Karma Jiga and Kumanga Andrahennadi who is a designer and PhD candidate.
The MDP module will strengthen our knowledge of existing design methods and show us new ones. Daily meditation sessions (in the first week) will hopefully allow us to participate in the module with a clear mind.
Having never tried meditation before I went into it with an open mind, if there is one thing I’ve learned at DJCAD it’s never to dismiss possibilities until you’ve given them some thought and consideration. I was surprised at how relaxing the sessions were, clearing your mind and thinking about very little is definitely a good idea. As Masters students (or any student really) we have far too much to think about.
Having said that, I’m not too sure if I’ll continue with it, I’d like to think I will but I’m not very hopeful, we’ll see, I might try when I find myself sitting doing nothing.
