Silver

The narrative project, which we finished a week or so ago, led me to produce this brooch as one of set of two. The text was etched and the silver is oxidised after polishing. Once the work has been assessed I’ll post an image of the pair of brooches which contain (between them) the text of ‘that’ paragraph from the Declaration of Arbroath.

2010 Second update

Two posts in one day!

After the colour project came the narrative one. I chose ‘Scottish Identity’ as the theme for this. The finshed piece will be a silver brooch inspired by the thistle, The Declaration of Arbroath and this (2010) being the year we might get to vote in an independence referendum.

So far I’ve had a look at various things in Edinburgh and come up with a basic design but the finished design has yet to be dedided.

Some inspiration

The picture above is the Covenanters memorial in Greyfriars. Below are some sketches inspired by the day out in Edinburgh, firstly one inspired by some coats of arms I saw in Parliament House.

Below is a sketch of a brooch in the National Museum, Chambers St.

The one above has a bit of a thistle thing going on and the text, if I decided to include it, will be photo etched. I’ll probably have the rest of the paragraph from the declaration in the centre. More to come on this project soon.

A bit of a catch up

It’s been a while so I thought I’d make my last post of 2009. We’re all on holiday from Uni now, not due back ’til 17th January when the reviews of semester one work take place (17th & 18th) .

Our final semester one project was based around colour and acrylic/resin. It hasn’t been a project I’ve enjoyed much, things haven’t gone well, some of the properties of acrylic and resin have taken a bit of getting used to. There has been a lot of trial and error but I think the final piece (Ver 2.0) will work. Pictures in the new year.

Our next project is a narrative project and we’ve been given a list of potential subjects and have to produce a brooch. Quite a few of them appeal to me but I am going for ‘Scottish Identity’.

2010 may be the year I get to vote for something a bit closer to my Scottish Identity so I thought that it would be fitting to go with that. If I don’t get to vote then I suppose the brooch will be a tribute to the year democracy got screwed over by a bunch of gutless MSPs.

Well thats 2009 blogging done and dusted, seasons greetings to everyone and good luck in 2010.
