March Update

I’ve posted a couple of updates on the final year blog in the last few days, on the box brooch page and the RFID ring page. This week I’m waiting on some RP models of the RFID ring (image below) from Shapeways, silver from Cooksons and the cast box brooch from Niagara Falls, all should be here by Friday.

Box Brooch

I’ve finalised plans to have my first degree show piece cast this morning, it’s an updated version of the box brooch I submitted as my Goldsmiths entry and a .stl model has been sent to Niagara Falls casting company which should be ready early next week. There are changes to the rear of the brooch, and I’ve reduced the depth of it but the changes enhance the design. I now need to get a Cooksons order done so I can make the brooch rear plate and begin a couple of other pieces.

Renders and an update on the design will appear on the final year blog later today or tomorrow and photos of the piece will appear after assessments.

Last week and the next week or so…

So being successful in the Goldsmiths competition means I will be making at least one piece of jewellery from precious metal, which will be silver.

The box brooch from the previous post will be created in the very near future. Over the next few days I’ll have to make some alterations to the CAD model because I wasn’t happy with the hinge arrangement after I got the RP model model back, then I’ll get a wax 3D printed and then hopefully get the piece cast. In most cases it’s usual to get a mould made to create the wax from and allow multiple copies to be made, but because this is a one-off piece I can’t justfy (or afford) the cost of that.

Also last week I was in touch with a company which specialises in RFID technology, they’ve agreed to sponsor me by lending me the equipment I need to produce the interactive RFID concept. This is a major boost for me because without help like this It would be impossible for me to afford the technology, there will be (much) more on this later.

Summer (Non) Holidays

That seems to be 2nd year done and dusted bar the official results around the end of May. I picked up a brief for our summer project today, it’s mainly a research and development project taking in which direction we want to go in as a jeweller and where we might see our work being sold.

I’m not sure at all about the direction I’d like to go in, I thought my inspiration was going to be from industry and found objects but still have a bit of a lasting link to the organic approach I had to my final HND project at College, I won’t discount anything at the moment, I’ve also still got medical uses for jewellery at the back of my mind thanks to DHTP.

Whatever I do I think it’ll involve small scale casting because it’s my favourite process although I’m thinking about moving away from cuttlefish because I’m unsure about the sustainability of the product, sustainable and ethical sourcing of materials is something else I’m becoming more aware of and interested in. I may try Delft clay casting, I’ve done some looking around and it seems to give better results than cuttlefish. Now I need to find a job for the summer holidays so I can pay the rent.

Roll on 3rd year.

Still on the make.

More pictures showing the cuff link development. The second link is taking longer to shape because I have to get it looking like the twin of the first.

The second cuff link, on the left below, is getting close to being just right. It just needs a bit more filing to size and shape around the top section before I emery the surfaces.

And below are the two cuff links looking just about the same apart from some surface finishing. After that it’s time to add some details like leaves, a hint of a stem and some surface texturing.

Edit – I’ve just finished putting a texture on the cuff link surfaces, leaves next but that’ll have to wait, I think I’m having a day out today.

On the make!

I’m in the process of making a pair of thistle cuff links for a commission. I’m making the main body from cast silver and did the (cuttlefish) castings this morning. I did 3 in total and will work with the two most similar pieces (pictured, with a 1p coin). I think they turned out quite well considering the level of randomness when casting with cuttlefish. Lots of filing and shaping ahead of me today while listening to the football. I’ll post more images as they develop.
